CAMP GRAYLING- geographically in between two of the best rivers in the Midwest- The Au Sable and the Manistee Rivers.

This has been a very hot topic lately. Many believe this was a quick land grab from the Military Base in Grayling from the DNR. There have been many local meetings and much opposition has been brought forth. Primary groups involved have been the Anglers of the Au Sable and Upper Manistee River Association. The main focus is the enormous amount of land which the Military Base wishes to acquire. Some 162,000 acres of additional land to practice drone operations and cyber warfare tactics. There has also been discussion of more and later in the day aerial practice runs as well as artillery firing at Camp Grayling. This obviously has many local riverfront and property owners ‘up in Arms’.
“The airspace for military training is the largest east of the Mississippi,” said Joe Hemming, president of the Anglers of the Au Sable.

“So, they’ve got plenty of room and area already in which to prepare for their mission and do their job,” Hemming said. “And quite frankly, if more space, more area is needed, other parts of the county are going to be far better suited for this type of activity.”
